Here a couple of photos from my trip to the Javari Valley:
The Javari river basin is located in the western Amazon and flows along the borders of Columbia, Peru and Brazil. The area is highly controversial as it contains many primary resources that have been harvested throughout recent history - Rubber, Lumber, and Oil just to name a few. Additionally, many indigenous tribes live in the area who have gone through fascinating cultural and economical changes primarily due to the harvesting of these resources. Much can be written and discussed about this subject and perhaps I will delve back into the topic in the future. Here's a couple of photos I took on my adventure to the Javari valley last August.
Wildlife
The giant South American river turtle is huge! They can reach over 1m meter in length and are heavily protected in many areas of the Amazon. Suffice to say, it was a rare treat to see one in it's natural habitat - even catching a special moment between the turtle and a butterfly.
...more to come.
