Yesterday was an interesting night for me. I have been waiting for thunderstorms to come to this part of the country for some time now and finally got it happen. This of course happened in the middle of the night till the morning and I was there to capture the action. Which of course meant I was up all night and finally got to sleep at 9 AM, fortunately, I did not have a workday today.
The weather conditions were perfect for this kind of thunder action. Warm and very humid weather with unstable air masses above Estonia.
The sad part is I was not able to get VERY epic shots of the lightning. Still, I'm going to show you what I was able to get.
The first thunderstorm arrived around 2 AM and I went outside to see what I can get. I don't have much open landscape around my home so I stood on the street.
This is probably the best shot I was able to get during the night.
I didn't use an ND filter for this because it was relatively dark outside due to cloudiness. It is a 10-second long shot.
When one thunderstorm left, the other one started closing in.
this is around 3.30 AM when I captured this shot of the cool clouds out of the window, a little bit sunrise there as well.
The next two shots are from the same place when another thunderstorm passed by around 4.30 AM.
After this, I waited for some time for another very intense thunderstorm to arrive. Unfortunately, it was associated with a plain gray sky and a wide area of strong rain. I decided to drive further away from my home and see the view from the field. It was useless, I barely saw any lighting even though there were 20 strikes every minute. This is a shot taken from the car in the street around 8 AM. Not much to see there. There was more rainfall in Tallinn than last month combined and several areas of Tallinn streets got flooded.
This is a screenshot of the lightningmaps.org of the lightning strikes. Big dot on the map indicates where I live.
So the night was full of action but the content I got, I'm not extremely pleased with it. Better next time!
