After visiting the Badlands, we were told we HAD to visit Wall Drug in the town of Wall, South Dakota. For miles and miles we had seen signs for their famous "free ice water" and their giant jackelope. My older brother had even insisted we visit. He claimed their restaurant was fantastic.
Wall Drug was established in 1931 as a simple pharmacy. When business never picked up, the wife of the founder suggested that what most people wanted while crossing the hot, dry prairie was a glass of ice cold water. They had plenty of water and plenty of ice so the owner and his sons made signs advertising their free water and the rest, as they say, is history.
So...the restaurant wasn't that great. It was your usual deep-fried fare. Chicken strips, sandwiches, burgers. Nothing impressive. We were hot and tired after visiting the Badlands and just wanted to get the visit over with, really.
