The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world, attaining a height of 5.5m, its incredibly long neck accounting for much of its height. The long neck has resulted in a complex blood circulatory system, which is not yet fully understood by zoologists. Research reveals that giraffes have a small, powerful, supercharged heart that is different to that possessed by other similar mammals.
Giraffes are ruminants. This means that they have more than one stomach (4 in this case) and the extra stomachs assisting with digesting food. Giraffes eat only plants and sleep rarely for more than a few minutes at a time. In fact, they almost never sleep for longer than five minutes at a stretch in the wild, often modifying the position so that they remain standing with their head and neck curved around to rest on their hindquarters.
