I took this picture this morning atop Donner Summit in in the Sierra Nevada of Northern California.
This is the area where the Donner Party became trapped by a snow storm in November 1846. Roughly half of the party survived, with many of them eating their dead friends and relatives to survive.
Today, it’s a 10 minutes drive from the lake up Donner Pass Road to reach the summit, and it’s a very popular spot for hikers; the Pacific Crest Trail runs right through the summit.
