His posture while waiting inherent in all real praying mantis, and inspired Carl Linnaeus to give it the name of Mantis religiosa: μάντις in Greek means "prophet", the prophet, priest, and religiosa Latin for the word "religious", as in this position the insect is similar to the clasped hands of man.
