I decided to visit Lake Pyhäjärvi on Pispala today. I went down to Hotel Rosendahl, a big hotel and the park in its vicinity where there is a public beach. Each year, about 500-1000 upper secondary school graduates to have dinner at the hotel and even more gather at the beach at later in the evening. I was there over 26 years ago. I must say that the scenery is very different at this time of the year. More icy and foggy lake views in store.
The opposite shore to the south in Pirkkala.
Don't ask me what the thingy in the foreground in the lower left is. But the island on the right is Viikinsaari. You can make out the restaurant building on it. There is a ferry connection between it and the city centre in the summer.
A leather factory operated in Pyynikki until 1936. I could be mistaken but I think that is the smokestack of the building.
Hotel Rosendahl
I drove up to Pispala. The district is on top of a tall ridge by the same name. It used to be a working class district in the past because it was close to the factories by the rapid in the centre and because before running water was available in every house carrying water up to the ridge was a lot of work. Because of the magnificient lake views and the proximity of the city centre, all the new houses tend to be quite expensive. It's a district with gentrification clearly underway despite many of the older houses being protected. What happens is when someone buys an old house in questionable condition is that they let it go until they can argue that the house is in a dangerously bad condition at which time it may be condemned for demolition and a new one can be built.
Probably built in the early 20th century
Näsinneula observation tower built in 1969
An ice lantern in the front yard of my parent's neighbours.
Maybe this could be reused.
