Tammerkoski is a rapid that flows through the city centre of Tampere. It's about 1 km long and the difference in elevation between the ends is 18 m. The rapid broke through an isthmus between two large lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi about 5000-7500 years ago when post glacial upthrust had caused Lake Näsijärvi no longer to be able to discharge towards the north. The lake flooded and the rapid broke through the moraine ridge. The rapid is why Tampere became an industrial centre in the first place. I'll show you some photos I took while visiting my old hometown last week.
This is Finlayson. It's a former cotton mill. There are mostly offices, a shopping centre and restaurants in it now.
