A Journey through Italy: one photo every day #17 - VIGOLO MARCHESE [ENG/ITA]

Vigolo Marchese è un piccolo borgo in provincia di Piacenza, nella regione italiana settentrionale dell'Emilia Romagna; è una delle frazioni più importanti di Castell'Arquato e si trova nell'alta val Chiavenna.

Vigolo Marchese è un piccolo villaggio ben noto per i suoi pregiati vini e per il complesso romanico tra cui l'antica chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista e Battistero. Entrambi immersi in un'oasi di pace e silenzio in questo paesaggio bucolico, la chiesa e il battistero risalgono all'inizio del XI secolo.

L'antico nome del paese era Vicolo de Marchesi, perché apparteneva al marchese Obertenghi ed esisteva già come villaggio prima del X secolo. Tra gli anni 1008 e 1012, Oberto II fondò il monastero benedettino dedicato a San Giovanni Battista con una chiesa e con un Ospizio, che era un ostello per i pellegrini lungo la Via Francigena.

Molto interessante è il battistero, probabilmente più antico della chiesa; forse è stato costruito su un antico tempietto romano, trasformato in una cappella consacrata a Santo Stefano e poi in un battistero.

Non dimentichiamo che Vigolo è rinomata per i suoi vini pregiati: il paese si trova lungo il sentiero della "Strada dei vini e dei sapori delle colline piacentine".

Vigolo Marchese is a small village in the province of Piacenza, in the Northen Italian region of Emilia Romagna; its Castell'Arquato's most important ward and It is located in the high Chiavenna Valley.

Vigolo Marchese is a small village well known for its prized wines and for the Romanesque complex including The ancient church of S. John the Baptist and Baptistry. Both immerses in an oasis of peace and silence in this bucolic landscape the church and a baptistery are dating from the early 11th century.

The village former name was Vicolo de Marchesi, because it belonged to the Obertenghi marquis, and it already existed as village before the 10th century. Between years 1008 and 1012, Oberto II founded the Benedictine monastery dedicated to St. John the Baptist with a church and with a "Hospitale", which was a hostel for pilgrims along the Via Francigena.

Very interesting is the baptistery, probably older than the church; maybe it has been built over an ancient Roman little temple, turned into a chapel consecrated to St Stephen and then in a baptistery.

Do not forget that Vigolo is renowned for its fine wines.: the village is located along the path of “the Road of Wines and Tastes of Piacenza Hills”.
