A Journey through Italy: one photo every day #21 - CONVERSANO [ENG/ITA]

Conversano è un'antica città della provincia di Bari. "Una città di arte e cultura - una città per la pace", recitano i segnali sulla strada principale.

Un tempo chiamata Norba, fu abitata già nel Paleolitico e secondo alcune leggende, l'antico cuore di Conversano esisteva sette secoli prima della distruzione di Troia e mille anni prima di Roma. In ogni caso ci sono prove che dimostrano che questi luoghi offrivano riparo e mezzi di sopravvivenza agli uomini primitivi sin dall'età della pietra.

Conversano è una città piena di palazzi nobiliari, chiese, monasteri e opere d'arte. Qui troviamo il suo maestoso Castello del XIV secolo, la tipica torre rotonda, la "Torre Maestra" normanna dei Conti di Brienne (XIII secolo) e il bastione difensivo a dodici lati costruito nel 1460 dai Conti di Acquaviva d'Aragona che furono responsabili anche per la crescita urbana, culturale e artistica della città.

Chiese e monasteri abbelliscono il centro città. La sobrietà e la ricchezza della storia si notano nelle facciate, nei campanili, negli interni e negli altari: dall'austera semplicità della Basilica romanica allo sfarzo dorato delle chiese seicentesche, tra storie di vescovi e badesse in lotte secolari, divisi tra lo spirito e il tempo.

Un'attrazione da non perdere è l'annuale "fiera della ciliegia", che si tiene nei primi dieci giorni di giugno. Bancarelle piene di dolci e marmellate e soprattutto ciliegie appena raccolte sono una vera gioia per gli occhi e le papille gustative. Conversano è anche noto per i suoi incomparabili frutteti di ciliegi (che producono le note ciliegie "ferrovia")

Conversano is ancient town in the province of Bari. 'A town of Art and Culture – a town for Peace', say the signs on the main roads.

Once called Norba, it was alredy inhabited in Paleolithic times, according to some legends, the ancient heart of Conversano existed seven centuries before the destruction of Troy and a thousand years before Rome. At any rate there is evidence to show that these places offered shelter and means of survival to primitive men since the stone age.

Conversano is a town full of noble palaces, churches, monasteries and works of art. Here is its stately 14th century Castle, the typical round tower, the Norman “Torre Maestra” of the Counts of Brienne (13th century) and the twelve-sided defense bastion built in 1460 by the Counts of Acquaviva d’Aragona who were responsible for the town’s urban, cultural and artistic growth.

Churches and monasteries embellish the town centre. The sobriety and richness of history are noted in the facades, in the belfries, in the inteiors and altars: from the austere simplicity of the romanesque Basilica to the gilded pomp of seventeenth-century churches, amidst the history of bishops and abbesses in the centuries-long wars, divided in spirit and time.

An attraction not to be missed is the annual “cherries fair”, held in the first ten days of June. Stalls loaded with cherry cakes and jams and above all mountains of freshly picked cherries are a real joy for the eyes and the taste-buds. Conversano is also known for its incomparable cherry orchards (which produce the well-known “ferrovia” cherries).
