We happened to be headed back across the country and made this stop. So glad we did.
Inside Meramec Caverns was a Civil War base of operations for Union soldiers before the Confederacy (including Jesse and Frank James) attacked and took it over. Apparently this is how Jesse James first learned of it and returned years later to make it a robbery hideout.
