30 to 40 years ago the coal and steel industry was booming in West Germany, creating many jobs and attracting workers from all over europe. It was a boom, results are that the ruhrgebiet is now the biggest agglomeration area in germany (even bigger than Berlin). When China decided to step into the coal and steel production, things changed rather quickly. Coal mines were closed and lied to fallow. Today these buildings have their own definition of beauty and are widely used in a cultural and social way to remember the past.
