In the middle of Egypt is the Western Desert of the Sahara, where on the east side of the main highway is the White Desert (I'll post pics soon!) and on the other side is the Black Desert. This is from my first trip through this region, and the black desert is always the first stop on most 4x4 journeys. It is much smaller than the other side, with only a few of these mountains of black rock.
The orange Saharan sand runs up and disappears as the black rock pushes through the earth, creating this odd formation. No camera tricks, the rock really is black! You can see more images on google
We get out of our rickety old Toyota 4x4 and are greeted by this:
Camera: Canon 40D
Lens: 10-22mm @ 22mm
Shutter Speed: 1/125 secconds
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 100
Here is a color version to give you an idea of how dark the rock actually is compared to the sand. This is why I felt B&W was better for this photo.
And a more menacing wide angle of it
Camera: Canon 40D
Lens: 10-22mm @10mm
Shutter Speed: 1/250 secconds
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 100
If you're ever in the western desert of Egypt, make sure your driver stops by the black section for a half hour before they take you over to the white, which has literally PURE WHITE chalk formations which are even more amazing. Stay tuned and I'll be posting them hopefully soon!
