Strange happenings in the insect world. Yesterday, I saw this fly sitting on a flower with a hoverfly just above it:
The top fly kept its position very accurately:
When the larger fly moved, the hoverfly went with it, keeping the exact same distance overhead:
This went on for some time, moving from flower to flower:
Maybe it is on flower patrol, maybe it is performing a weird mating ritual, but it is far more likely the top one is a secret, self-learning CIA drone studying and emulating insect behaviour for camouflage and cover.
