The title is the literal translation of the Dutch Armenveen, which is a part of the Haaksbergerveen in the east of The Netherlands.
The peat bogs were owned collectively by groups of farmers, who mined peat here for heating their houses. The peat in the Armenveen was of inferior quality, so they let the poor people get peat there for free.
