Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!
Wednesday used to be reserved for architectural photography contest and I think I will be still sticking to the original schedule of photo contests hosted by so let me show you my today´s contribution to the challenge.
As you might have already noticed in some of my latest posts, I recently got myself a new (smart phone) camera and I have been enjoying putting it through its paces these days.
One of the things that my previous smart phone camera sucked really bad at was the night photography and I was so happy to find out that my new camera actually takes pretty decent night shots.
Look at this one, for example.
Not that bad for a smart phone, huh? :) Now let me add some background info about this remarkable building. It is the St. Hedwig´s Church, one of the most important modernist architectural landmarks of my Czech hometown of Opava.
Built between 1933 and 1937, the church is considered one of the greatest works of the prominent Silesian architect Leopold Bauer. Easily recognizable by its unusual, pyramid-like appearance, the church is dedicated to St. Hedwig (also known as Hedwig of Silesia), a famous Duchess of Silesia who lived in the late 12th and early 13th century. Known for her great military skills while defending her region from the Teutonic Knights, she was canonized by the Pope Clement IV in 1267.
Interestingly enough, it was just a moment ago, after I completed writing this post, that I noticed that the St. Hedwig´s feast day is celebrated today, on October 17, in my country! What a cool coincidence! :) The Czech version of the name Hedwig is actually Hedvika so we are having the St. Hedvika Day today.
This is what this magnificent church looks like in broad daylight (taken with my old smart phone).
Do you also have any modernist churches in your hometowns, my Steemit friends? Feel free to share them with us in the comments below :) Have a wonderful day and Steem on!
