Another day, another coin. Today I’d like to show you a British half-crown from 1946—a coin I ordered from Allegro back when silver prices were still low, before some sellers realized that the price had gone up a bit. I really enjoy these kinds of purchases because, while it may not be some incredible rarity, if you can buy old circulating silver at a good price, it’s always a great opportunity for me to expand my collection. Take a look! # United Kingdom Half Crown 1946 This is a British half crown coin, or more precisely 2 shillings and 6 pence, so we’re dealing with a fairly substantial denomination here—one that, in the old British monetary system, was a major unit of circulation rather than mere small change. On the obverse, we see George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, with the classic legend GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX, which in short denotes his title as King of Great Britain and the Dominions. I really like this style of British portraits because they are simple, dignified, and unpretentious, and the coin itself immediately has that old imperial feel, even though it was just ordinary currency that was in regular circulation. In my opinion, the reverse is much more interesting, as it features a coat of arms with the symbols of Great Britain—namely England, Scotland, and Ireland—flanked by crowned monograms, the inscription “HALF CROWN,” and the date 1946. The whole design looks very elegant and classic, without being overly elaborate, yet with plenty of details that make this side of the coin simply a pleasure to look at. It’s worth mentioning that 1946 is quite special here, as it marks the last year of British circulation coins minted in 500 fine silver; starting in 1947, the UK switched to copper-nickel coins, so this represents the final half silver coin of the old system. To many people, this might just be an ordinary circulation coin, but for me, it’s precisely these coins that make sense, because they combine history, silver, and a very attractive appearance. My specimen, of course, shows signs of circulation light scratches and some tarnish, but the details are still very nice, especially on the reverse, where the coat of arms and inscriptions look really good. Buying it at the old silver price was an added bonus, because in moments like that, you get the feeling you’ve pulled off a little arbitrage, maybe not on a grand scale, but enough to be satisfied with the purchase. Dziś chciałbym przedstawić brytyjskie pół korony z 1946 roku, czyli monetę, którą zamówiłem z Allegro jeszcze po starych cenach srebra, zanim część sprzedających ogarnęła, że kruszec trochę uciekł do góry. Właśnie takie zakupy bardzo lubię, bo nie jest to może żaden niesamowity rarytas, ale jeśli można kupić stare srebro obiegowe w dobrej cenie, to dla mnie jest to zawsze dobra okazja do powiększenia kolekcji. Zapraszam! # Wielka Brytania Half Crown 1946 Jest to brytyjska moneta o nominale half crown, czyli pół korony, a dokładniej 2 szylingi i 6 pensów, więc mamy tutaj już całkiem konkretny nominał, który w starym brytyjskim systemie pieniężnym był większym pieniądzem obiegowym, a nie jakąś najmniejszą drobnicą. Na awersie widzimy Jerzego VI, czyli ojca królowej Elżbiety II, z klasyczną legendą GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX, co w skrócie oznacza jego tytulaturę jako króla Wielkiej Brytanii i dominiów. Bardzo lubię ten typ brytyjskich portretów, bo są proste, poważne i nieudawane, a sama moneta od razu ma taki stary imperialny klimat, nawet jeśli była zwykłym pieniądzem, który normalnie chodził w obiegu. Rewers jest moim zdaniem dużo ciekawszy, bo mamy tutaj tarczę herbową z symbolami Wielkiej Brytanii, czyli Anglią, Szkocją i Irlandią, po bokach koronowane monogramy, napis HALF CROWN oraz datę 1946. Całość wygląda bardzo elegancko i klasycznie, bez przesadnego kombinowania, ale jednocześnie z dużą ilością detali, które sprawiają, że ta strona monety jest po prostu przyjemna do oglądania. Warto wspomnieć, że 1946 rok jest tutaj dość fajny, ponieważ jest to ostatni rok brytyjskich monet obiegowych bitych jeszcze w srebrze próby 500, bo od 1947 roku Wielka Brytania przeszła już na monety z miedzioniklu, więc mamy tutaj takie końcowe półsreberko starego systemu. Dla wielu osób może to być zwykła obiegówka, ale dla mnie właśnie takie monety mają sens, bo łączą w sobie historię, srebro i bardzo dobry wygląd. Mój egzemplarz ma oczywiście ślady obiegu, lekkie rysy i trochę przybrudzeń, ale detale są nadal bardzo ładne, szczególnie na rewersie, gdzie herb i napisy prezentują się naprawdę dobrze. Kupienie jej po starej cenie srebra było dodatkowym plusem, bo w takich momentach człowiek ma wrażenie, że zrobił mały arbitraż, może nie na wielką skalę, ale wystarczająco, żeby być zadowolonym z zakupu.
