My English friend and I drove 100 km through Scotland in search of abandoned villages, castles, churches, and factories. Why "abandoned" in particular? For inspiration and textures for my webcomic "Romantically Apocalyptic".
This Scottish Lord's manor is just one of the places we visited, but it seared itself in to my soul with its unique atmosphere. The Caledonian forest completely swallowed the castle, as though it is being absorbed from within.
I've always wanted to own an abandoned castle. However, it turns out the place is for sale (as we learned from a sign nailed to a tree). I forgot to take a photo of the sign, because I was so busy looking at the awesomeness of the castle. So I'm not sure what the asking price was. I began to explore the structure, and this was the first scene that met my eyes:
Greeted by the forest -- trees growing in the rooms:
A garden inside, and outside, the dining room:
A creepy corridor:
Brambles of trees, collapsed ceilings, and beams:
A staircase, but the railing is long gone:
Tea, anyone?
And here we see some artwork from the elusive Scottsman:
On the second floor:
A turret:
The dungeon entrance?
Exploring the "dungeon"
The ceiling is all hypercubes!
The ceiling beamed with a beam
A beautiful fireplace:
Suspicious graffiti on the wall. Apparently the fault of the devil:
The forest climbed in to every space in the castle, with the wind whispering in the leaves. It was a very enjoyable day, being able to explore and have a seat on a comfortable patch of moss, forgetting that I was in the 21st century.
