Greetings Steemians
After visiting the Cathedral de Palma, I will show you today another main sight of Mallorca's capital, the Castle de Bellveder. It's name already is a promise that one can enjoy a wonderful view over Palma and it's harbor. Yet not before the effort of ascending the Castle hill is made. Not undemanding, especially in the hot summer months.
The castle was built in the 14th century and designed to serve as a palace for the Kings of Mallorca but also as a fortress. A special feature is it's circular construction, the only such amongst all Spanish fortresses.
Today the Castle is in public hands and meanwhile also harbours Palma's History Museum. The Museum is worth a visit but I was mainly impressed by the Castle's unique location and architecture.
So let's have a look:
The model to the top-left nicely shows the circular shape of the Castle's construction design.
The highest of the three watchtowers.
A thin footbridge leads to the keep, the last retreat in case of a siege.
A peculiarity of the inner arcades is the combination of Romanesque architecture of the lower floor...
...and Gothic architecture of the upper floor.
The great view indeed does credit to the Castle's name.
"La Seu", Palma's magnificent Cathedral enthroned behind the harbour bassin.
A last look back.
Thanks for watching and 'til next time!
