Have you ever wondered where Melbourne's three museum's store their priced possessions? Melbourne has three vibrant museums -- Melbourne Museum, Immigration museum and Science Works. Museum Victoria's Moreland Annexe is a warehouse in an unassuming suburb in Moreland and this is where Museum Victoria stores . The warehouse happens to hold some of Australia's greatest historical assets.
The Moreland Annexe is a facility that is closed to the public except for exclusive tours organised by its staff for supporters and media. I happened to be invited to one such tours last week and the staff gave me a fascinating insight into a range of exhibits that were stored very carefully for future shows.
Exhibits that aren’t on display are stored at the annex or facilities like it. Museums Victoria has 15 million objects in its collection. Only about two per cent is on display at any given time.
Posted is a pic from the tour provided by the museum. The picture is from the animal and wildlife section of the annexe. One needs hours inside this annexe to absorb these stories.
