The White Cliffs of Escalante Grand Staircase and the Paria River that cuts from Bryce Canyon all the way to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon are a wonderful place to explore.
I made a film about this area and one place in particular, the infamous "Hole in the Wall". One of the many locations of the same name used by the outlaw Butch Cassidy.
An interesting thing about the image above, this is Deer Springs Wash which flows up into the White Cliffs in the distance. Where the two forks meet in the foreground, notice the slight lightly colored circular depression? That is an archeological site where they discovered the remains of an small Anasazi era roundhouse with an adjacent livestock pen. And inside were the remains of a 60+ year old man who had simply laid down and died.
I find is somewhat comforting to know that over 1,000 years ago someone lived here. I would have loved it!
This is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.
Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.
If you are interested in helping with this project I would love to have your assistance!
