The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a great event for anybody remotely interested in motorsport due to the sheer variety of vehicles on display. The event is based upon a times hill climb.
I've been to several of the events and today's photo of the mighty Metro 6R4 was take on the 25th June 2005. It was taken on the rally stage which is separate from the hill climb event.
This particular car was raced in 1996 RAC Rally and was driven by Malcom Wilson with Nigel Harris in co-driving. It raced in the Group B class which was short lived due to both drivers and spectators losing their lives due to the sheer power of the vehicles. Unfortunately Harris died in a plane crash on the second day of the Rally Cote d'lviore just a year later in 1987 (Ivory Coast, Africa).
Malcom Wilson (OBE) is still involved in the sport and is the owner of the M-Sport team.
The 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine produced in the region of 410bhp which drove all 4 wheels. A road going version of the car was produced with a limited run of 200 units to meet the homologation requirements; these cars had in the region of 250bhp. The design rights to the power plant were later bought by Jaguar and developed further for use in the XJ220 supercar.
