Today we switch to my birthday in 2014 and a family visit to the Leighton Buzzard narrow gauge (2ft) railway.
The railway was built just after the first world war and was used to service the quarries situated just north of the town. I gather it was in use until the 60's, the quarries produce sand for multiple uses such as building and golf course bunkers.
The engine used on the day of our visit was Elf which was built in 1937 by Orenstein & Koppel (Germany). Elf was working on plantations in the Cameroon until 1971 and was purchased by the railway in 1973.
