Pain. It is something we all experience at some point in our lives and for many of us, it seems to be a constant struggle to hold it at bay, reduce it to the bearable. It comes in many forms of course and can be the result of many things but, the way we each deal with it and the levels we can bear are uniquely our own. When we experience pain, we assume that we are strong and when we wince or the tears come, it is because the pain we feel, is worse than that of others. Our experience is more difficult.
But pain cannot be compared in this way as our experiences are guided by more than our nerves and when pain is involved, often to comes suffering. Suffering is pain of mind, not body and some are more and others less equipped to handle the feelings that arise from the face of pain. Many feel the pressure of the experience and hold it aloft as an excuse to scream, shout, be angry for 'You do not understand!' and 'You do not know what I am going through!'
Are you sure about that? How can you know my experience? Are you assuming because no tear falls that there is no pain? Do you consider that your method for dealing with pain is poor, do you consider that your feelings about it are self inflicted wounds that need not occur? Do you think your emotions and outbursts are a symptom of the physical or, a reaction of the emotional? Do you think you have no control?
The pain itself is what it is but the suffering, that is altogether separate. We suffer because we choose to and many may argue this point but, it is the truth as I see it. No matter the circumstance, no matter how unpleasant, the emotional suffering need not occur, to allow it to run free is to be locked in its jail, to be powerless to control but with a target to blame. It is the fault of the pain, not mine at all. Are you sure, absolutely certain that this is the case?
How many are curious as to what it really is, how many explore the pain they experience, how many dive into it and immerse themselves? And how many do all they can to take their mind off it, reduce it, fight it, medicate it... avoid it? How can you say you understand if you haven't experienced it fully but instead run away, how can you know there is no solution at hand when you have taken a pill before the search has begun?
Do you know pain, or do you choose to suffer forever?
