A few days ago, I published photos taken during the filming of the BBC series "War & Peace" in St. Petersburg [1, 2]. The history of these pictures is simple. My Moscow friend and I walked around the summer city, in the most popular and tourist places. We found filming near the Winter Canal. Extras were dressed in historical costumes and willingly posed. (By the way, what is in English for "массовка"? Extras, statists, figurants? Dictionaries offer different options, but what word is used in real life?)
The main characters did not go out to the public and it was difficult to photograph them, except from afar. But I took a few shots, despite the poor conditions. Pierre Bezukhov (Paul Dano) and Prince Andrei (James Norton) during the shooting of the scene on the embankment of the Winter Canal.
You can see this scene in the first series, at about the eighth minute. The carriage that served as the hero of this series this series of photographs passes in the background. But this carriage is almost not visible in the film, it looks like a blurred shadow.
By the way, in the next scene, in the ninth minute, Pierre crosses the Catherine's Canal along the Krasnogvardeysky Bridge, built in 1956. The bridge so well fit into the landscape that it is often removed in historical films. I wrote post about this bridge recently.
