We have time without taking pictures of any kind because we are in quarantine so we got creative... And messy.
We always see spectacular pictures of liquid splashes and things flying through the air and we wanted to recreate the style by doing it ourselves. There are many ways to do it, trying many times until it is perfect, it can also be done by taking different photos and making the final composition in Photoshop (like we did), it can even be done with a 3D rendering and it looks amazing.
We really tried to do it in the "perfect" single-shot way until it came out right, but it came out terrible, in the end we took several photos that came out relatively well and then put them together using Adobe Photoshop CC. In this publication we will only show the step by step in pictures and in the next one we will expose the disaster behind the cameras and the lighting set we used.
Our proagonist drink is a Chelada, a Mexican drink made of beer, salt and lemon/lime. It is the small cousin of the Michelada, which is also classic from the same country but with big differences, this last one is a cocktail with a base of beer to which we add, tomato juice, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, pepper and lemon/lime.
Tenemos tiempo sin tomar fotos de ningun tipo por estar en cuarentena así que nos pusimos creativos... Y desastrozos.
Siempre vemos fotografías espectaculares de salpicaduras de líquidos y cosas volando por los aires y quisimos recrear el estilo haciendolo nosotros mismos. Hay muchas maneras de hacerlo, intentandolo muchas veces hasta que salga perfecto, también puede hacerse tomando diferentes fotos y hacer la composición final en Photoshop (como lo hicimos nosotros), incluso puede hacerse con un renderizado 3D y queda increible.
La verdad intentamos hacerlo de la manera "perfecta" de un solo disparo hasta que saliera bien, pero salió terrible, al final hicimos varias fotos que salieron relativamente bien y luego juntamos usando Adobe Photoshop CC. En esta publicación solo mostraremos el paso a paso en imágenes y en el próximo expondremos el desastre trás cámaras y el juego de iluminación que utilizamos.
Nuestra bebida proagonista es una Chelada, una bebida Mexicana de cerveza, sal y limón/lima. Es la prima pequeña de la Michelada, que también es clásica del mismo pais pero con grandes diferencias, esta última es un coctel con base de cerveza a la que se le agrega, jugo de tomate, salsa Tabasco, salsa inglesa, chile en polvo, sal, pimienta y limón/lima.
The first task was to remove unwanted objects. The baby tripod and the fill flash were very useful but can't be for the final result so... Bye.
La primera tarea fue remover los objetos indeseados. El bebe trípode y el flash de relleno y revote fueron muy útiles pero no pueden estar para el resultado final asi que... Chao.
Some small modifications to the lemon that was a bit pounded and some makeup to turn it into a lime slice just because the bright green color looks better in this case.
Unos pequeños modificaciones al limón que estaba un poco aporreado y un poco de maquillaje para convertirlo en una rodaja de lima solamente porque el color verde brillante se ve mejor en este caso.
We added a falling ice, so we could make the splash effect more realistic. By the way, some people put ice on their Cheladas, we particularly like it with the beer very cold but without ice.
Agregamos un hielo cayendo, para poder hacer el efecto de salpicadura más realista. Por cierto, hay quienes le colocan hielo a sus Cheladas, particularmente nos gusta con la cerveza bien fria pero sin hielo.
Choosing the right splashes from the photos was a bit difficult but then comes the fun part of putting it in place.
By the way, all the photos were taken with our Sony Alpha300 with the following settings:
- f/4.5
- 1/200s
- ISO 200
- 18-70 @ 26mm
The splash photos are taken with a Nikon Coolpix P520 in sports scene mode that takes a burst of 30 photos in one second.
Elejir las salpicaduras indicadas de las fotos fue un poco dificil pero luego viene la parte divertida de colocarla en su lugar.
Por cierto todas las fotos las tomamos con nuestra Sony Alpha300 con los siguientes valores:
- f/4.5
- 1/200s
- ISO 200
- 18-70 @ 26mm
Las fotos de las salpicaduras las tomamos con una Nikon Coolpix P520 en el modo de escena de deportes que toma una ráfaga de 30 fotos en un segundo.
Then we modified the splashes with a low opacity, when we were happy with the position we used clipping masks for the contour and in the same masks we used the brush with low opacity to give them transparency in the lighter areas of the liquid, this gives more realism and volume, contributing with the effect of a conical splash upwards just like what we want to achieve.
Luego fuimos modificando las salpicaduras con una opacidad baja, cuando estuvimos felices con la posición usamos máscaras de recorte para el contorno y en las mismas máscaras usamos el pincel con baja opacidad para darles transparencia en las zonas más claras, este da más realismo y volúmen, contribuyendo con el efecto de una salpicadura cónica hacia arriba justo como lo que queremos lograr.
Giving some finishing touches here and there, also adding salt splash that we did with a modified Photoshop brush and the "bevel and relief" effect.
By the way, the "salt" we used in the base of the glass is sugar, it looks better in photos because it has bigger grains, the salt on the contrary, it looked like something else.
And BOOM!... There you have it.
The next picture is the one with the best resolution, the previous ones are just screenshots.
Dando unos toques finales por aqui y allá, también agregando salpicadura de sal que hicimos con un pincel de Photoshop modificado y el efecto "bisel y relieve".
Por cierto, la "sal" que usamos en la base del vaso es azúcar, se ve mejor en fotos por tener granos más grandes, la sal por el contrario, parecía otra cosa.
Y entonces ¡BOOM!... Ahí lo tienes.
La siguiente foto es la que tiene mejor resolución, las anteriores son solo capturas de pantalla.
Our photographic equipment is in urgent need of an upgrade but making such an investment in these times of quarantine is difficult knowing that it is uncertain whether the investment will be recovered soon, so we simply take out as much as we can from what we have, after all, we have always been clear that a better camera does not make a better photographer so all this serves to practice, improve, and most importantly... To have fun.
Nuestro equipo fotográfico esta necesitando con urgencia una actualización pero hacer una inversión así en estos tiempos de cuarentena es dificil sabiendo que es incierto si la inversión será recuperada pronto, así que simplemente le sacamos todo lo que podamos a lo que tenemos, despues de todo, siempre hemos tenido claro que una mejor cámara no hace un mejor fotógrafo así que todo esto nos sirve para practicar, mejorar, y lo más importante... Divertirnos.
