On Thursday, (May 24th) I was outside with our dog Sandy for his morning constitutional. As per usual, I brought him over to the gravelly grass next to the driveway (in a most likely futile effort to discourage small furries from nesting in our car engines).
As I leaned against the car, waiting for him to be done, I noticed motion coming from the woods to the right of me. A split second later, a hawk flew low to the ground in front of us (probably about 50 feet away), then landed on a tree branch and looked down at us. I imagine his thoughts were thus -
"She's back! The lady with the camera is outside again! I don't think she got my good side last time, so I'll give her another shot... hahaha, get it? Another shot? Geez, too bad these humans don't understand hawk - I bet she'd laugh at that joke..."
I fired off about a dozen snaps, then turned to peek at Sandy. When I looked back at the branch two seconds later, the hawk had completely disappeared - no doubt insulted I'd dared to look away. Sorry Hawk, but thanks for the pictures!
EDITED TO ADD - while I don't have confirmation yet from the hawk experts over at Hawk Watch International, I'm fairly certain this gal/guy is a Broad-winged Hawk
EDITED AGAIN MAY 30th
I just got an email from one of the experts at Hawk Watch who said yes, definitely a Broad-winged. 😊
