Maerdy and Ferndale lie at the north edge of the valley of the Rhondda Fach (as opposed to the Rhondda Fawr up the split to the west.) Below Porth, the river is one, the Rhondda, as the water hurries towards the Bristol Channel. The accent is so thick in Maerdy that people in Pontypridd, a scant 7-8 miles distant have trouble understanding them!
I had the privilege of living in the area for a short year and though it was a challenge to live there as "outsiders", the beauty of the area never failed to impress - despite the crop of wind turbines which plague many Welsh valleys and hillsides!
