Vor einigen Tagen unternahm ich eine kleine Klettertour auf den Großen Donnerkogel im Dachstein Gebirge. Es war erst mein zweiter Klettersteig überhaupt und ich ließ dabei gleich zu einer sehr spektakulären und doch anspruchsvollen Tour motivieren. Der Donnerkogel liegt am sogenannten Gosaukamm der sich am gleichnamigen Gosausee neben dem großen Dachsteinmassiv befindet. Die Tour ist sehr beliebt und deswegen ging es bereits früh am Morgen los.

A few days ago I undertook a small climbing tour on the Großer Donnerkogel in the Dachstein Mountains. It was only my second via ferrata ever and I was immediately motivated to a very spectacular and yet demanding tour. The Donnerkogel is located on the so-called Gosaukamm which is located at the eponymous Gosausee next to the large Dachstein massif. The tour is very popular and therefore we started early in the morning.
Gerade in der Urlaubszeit tummeln sich zahlreiche Touristen am Gosausee, die entweder Bergexpeditionen unternehmen oder einfach nur das kühle Nass des Sees aufsuchen. Der Donnerkogel Klettersteig ist mit der Schwierigkeit C/D ausgewiesen und am Besten mit der Gosaukammbahn erreichbar. Zunächst geht es ziemlich steil und doch etwas schwierig eine Felswand hinauf. Danach gibt es aber auch immer wieder einmal gemütlichere Abschnitte wo man sich nicht zwingend einhängen muss.
Especially during the vacation season, numerous tourists flock to Gosausee, either to undertake mountain expeditions or simply to seek out the cool waters of the lake. The Donnerkogel via ferrata is rated C/D and is best reached with the Gosaukamm cable car. At first it goes quite steeply and yet somewhat difficult up a rock face. After that, however, there are always more comfortable sections where you do not necessarily have to hang on.
Das Highlight des Klettersteiges ist die 40 Meter lange Himmelsleiter, die auf den letzten und ausgesetztesten Abschnitt Richtung Gipfel führt. Hier kann es sich schonmal etwas stauen, da maximal 3 Personen gleichzeitg auf der Leiter sein dürfen. Zugegeben war ich etwas Nervös, da ich soetwas zuvor noch nie gemacht habe. Aber ich hatte es mir schlimmer vorgestellt, als es tatsächlich war. Es hat sogar riesen Spaß gemacht die spektakuläre Leiter empor zu klettern.
The highlight of the via ferrata is the 40 meter long sky ladder, which leads to the last and most exposed section towards the summit. Here it can be a bit of a jam, since a maximum of 3 people may be on the ladder at the same time. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous, as I have never done anything like this before. But I imagined it to be worse than it actually was. It was even a lot of fun to climb up the spectacular ladder.
Am Gipfel angekommen erlebt man einen unfassbar schönen Ausblick auf den Dachsteingletscher und den gesamten Gosaukamm mit dem malerischen Gosausee im Vordergrund. Nach einer Gipfeljause gings wieder Bergab und ich konnte einen Sprung in den erfrischenden Bergsee nicht erwarten. Das Motiv vom Gosaussee und dem Dachstein im Hintergrund ist übrigens eines der berühmtesten Bergmotive Österreichs.
Arrived at the summit, you experience an incredibly beautiful view of the Dachstein glacier and the entire Gosaukamm with the picturesque Gosausee in the foreground. After a summit snack we went back downhill and I could not wait to jump into the refreshing mountain lake. The motif of Gosaussee and the Dachstein in the background is, by the way one of the most famous mountain motifs in Austria.
