Donets hill-fort is a multi-layered monument of archeology. In the sediments of the cultural layer, various archaeological materials were recorded in a wide chronological range from the Bronze Age to the Old Russian time. The monument was best known as the chronicle ancient Russian town of Donets VIII-XIII centuries. n. According to the Ipatiev Chronicle, it was in this city that the prince of Novgorod-Seversky principality Igor Svyatoslavich fled from Polovtsian captivity in the summer of 1185 or 1186.
The city of Donets, destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols, never in antiquity was associated with Kharkov itself and was 10 kilometers from the Kharkov fortress, on which the modern city was founded in the 17th century. The modern city of Donetsk is also not associated with Donets hill-fort .
