Advocacy for Men's Health
An image generated with AI
Last week I saw a campaign asking men to get tested for prostate cancer, which I believe is something to seriously ponder on, not only regarding the test, but the implications behind it.
Many of us believe if we feel okay then everything must be okay inside our body. This however, is not the case when it comes to health. Several conditions can grow and fester internally without giving us any clue until we have a major condition.
Some men might look healthy and strong physically and feel like they are on top of things, fulfilling their daily duties, however, they may be harboring conditions unknown to them internally. Waiting until a symptom shows up is often disastrous. Quite often the first symptom can be a life-threatening conditions needing emergency care because you waited for too long before before seeking a checkup.
This whole thing become more complicated because of how most men are conditioned. The mentality of bearing with pain and avoiding doctor visits unless absolutely necessary has led many men into early graves.
We tend to be more concerned about things externally; such as how our car oil needs changing, how our phones are up-to-date, or that our work equipment and gadgets for recreation must be in top shape, while the physical frame we rely on for work is neglected.
I truly believe that men must shift their views toward health matters. Health tests should not be postponed, and the checking of blood pressure, sugar, heart, liver, kidneys and prostates are definitely tests that shouldn't be put off, or waited to show signs before making a move. It is not about being afraid, but about knowledge, and responsibility. Proactively going for these tests when we are in good health, can only move us forward, rather than being in a position of play catch-up later on, because when health fails, so does everything else.
Our purpose as men is not just to work and meet responsibilities, but to we need to be of good health while doing so. Your family needs you to be alive for them. Your children needs you healthy; therefore, even if it is only just one test, it is definitely a good start.
