Air plants are curious little things that don't really require much maintenance. They are from the genus Tillandsia. What makes these plants interesting is that most don't need soil to survive. What little roots they do have are usually used to anchor them to their environment, whether it be a tree branch or even a telephone wire, and water is absorbed through the leaves.
I've had my air plant for about year and seven months now. I take care of it only by lightly spraying it with rain water every two or three days. I'm eager to share pictures of it now because it had finally bloomed! I knew something was going to happen because the inner leaves were starting to turn a little red. Then finally I saw a violet bud in the center. Within several days the petals elongated over the top of the plant until the pistil and stamens poked out. I think now that it bloomed it will slowly die, but not before growing some small "pups". The pups are baby air plants that can be plucked off and grown separately all over again.
I don't know what species my air plant is..
If anyone has any ideas please share!
