As the child, before we had the internet, the only Asians I saw in American media were stereotypes - math whizzes, ancient wise old folks or kung fu masters. They were also largely absent from the books taught in schools, leaving me bereft of any childhood heroes.
Demographics in the US has shifted now and so has public discourse. I see more people of color in mainstream media in juicy roles. I'm delighted that Green Card, a new musical about immigrants' struggle in the US, is enjoying so much success.
