Does being Liberal mean wearing short clothes, doing parties at night, drinking and smoking, and laughing with people of the opposite sex.
Yayyee!! I'm Liberal. No dude, you are a fool!
If this is someone's definition of being liberal, trust me they are far from being liberal, rather I would say they are shackled by their poor thoughts.
While all of us talk about being liberals, I haven't seen or met anyone yet who is liberal in the true sense.
So what defines liberality for me?
- Zero discrimination based on caste, color, sexual orientation, or ethnicity - Truly believing in #blacklivesmatter, not asking surnames to check on the caste one belongs to, not seeing gays and lesbians with an eye, sipping a cup of tea with eunuchs - all of this should be normal for someone who calls themselves liberal.
- Co-existence of males and females in every space - We should be equally responsible and able to do every task at hand, irrespective of our gender.
- Respecting others' thoughts and opinions - People around you might have different opinions which can be different from yours. Listening to all of it with an open mind and not being judgemental thereafter is being liberal.
- Showing love and respect to people of all age group - Respecting elders is what we all do, but that should not devoid youngers from the respect they deserve.
- Wrongly using your power or position - If you have it, use it for the best of the world, not just the best of yourself.
- Giving breathing space to people around you - Allowing your kids, partners and others in your family to make their own decisions, not interfering in their lives unless badly required and giving them space is a very crucial aspect of liberality.
These are just a few on the checkboard that I think are a must to be called liberal. There can be many more, and again the list can be different for different people.
Being liberal is a virtue, it's not something one can learn or unlearn easily. The roots of liberality start right from the day you are born, they are dug by the family around you. Initially, it's the family which governs our mindset and actions. We believe what they do is the only right thing to do. With time, as we grow, we see the outside world and start to form our own opinions and thoughts. Our attributes towards liberality actually take a different shape from there. How open or liberal we are to adapt and digest the new things coming our way decide how well we mold ourselves to the right or better things around us.
Being liberal or non-liberal doesn't make you a good or bad person, but it does impact our society. A liberal society paves the way to growth and success and that's why liberality is so important.
Am I a liberal person?
To an extent yes! I think I can call myself liberal. But according to me, no one is completely liberal. Each one of us has our own restrictions and boundaries that not only do we follow, but we expect others also to follow. Liberality in the true sense is difficult to achieve. But getting closer to it day by day is what we can wish and target for.
What am I doing to imbibe liberality in my child?
- First and foremost, I don't do pink and blue for him. His wardrobe, his toys are all colors. He wears both pink and blue.
- We respect our house help as much as we respect each other in the house.
- We practice values from different religions and show our acceptance to all.
- We love pets and treat them as well as we treat our own children.
- We follow a completely open culture where one can share their thoughts, opinions, and wishes however they want. We don't restrict the usage of words like porn and breasts. We just ensure such vocabulary is being used in the most appropriate manner and without hurting anyone's sentiments.
