It's not that it won't hold
in a world of bitcoin millionaires
and tech billionaires and
too big to fail bankers,
or a world with imaginary
welfare queens and bad hombres
and politicians who actually did
get their starts on reality TV.
The myth of merit-
ocracy is not unlike the myth
or rather the illusion of
nobility, blue blood, good hair,
fake tits, corn syrup, and affordable
housing in a city with a supposedly
booming economy. In a country
that conflates wealth with God,
merit, and intel
-ligence, it should
not be surprising to find people
signaling virtue after a natural
disaster only to systematically
vote to deprive others just like
them of meaningful lives after
the fires stop burning, after the
flood waters recede into the dark-
ness of the abyss, after all of the
camera crews have packed up
and gone home.
