Being single for the past couple of years, after being in long-term relationships for most of my adult life, has made me consider that it’s possible I could remain single the rest of my life. This poem was inspired by my thoughts on living life without experiencing the gift of closeness with a partner again.
Living Without
Breath catches
at the memory
of love gone,
at the prospect of
the loss of its touch.
Heaviness
settles at the thought
of time lost,
irrevocable
without intimacy.
Not the eyes,
will I plumb their depths.
Not the arms,
will I share embrace.
Can I thrive without?
