The holes in his shirt
were not room enough.... to let out
his endless joy.
To the children out there with less than enough.
To their joy that stays endless joy that stands in the midst of want.
The smiles in the suffering, the laughter in want.
To the children whose joy, sorrow has failed to break.
The holes in their clothes letting in more joy.
A Haiku is a short Japanese Poem consisting of 3 lines.
Traditionally, Japanese haikus consist of 17 syllables, in three phrases of five, seven and five syllables respectively. Among contemporary poems teikei (fixed form) haiku continue to use the 5-7-5 pattern while jiyuritsu (free form) haiku do not.
This is a Jiyuritsu Haiku.
