While learning of Edgar Allan Poe I started realizing how misunderstood he was on earth and how appreciated he became after death.
Cool things I learned:
(Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong)
•his birth mother, foster mother, brother and wife all pass from tuberculosis (the red death)
•he only made 14 dollars off The Raven
•his wife Virginia was also his first cousin, whom he referred to as “Sissy” - saying she was like a sister to him .... weird but not really for that day and age
• he was 27 and she was only 13 when they tied the not (although she pretended to be 21)
•he was found on a park bench in a delerious state and died two days later but could never explain what happened to him therefore the cause of his death is a mystery
•only 7 people attended his funeral
Seven.... just seven.
And now you can’t learn English literature without mentioning him. He introduced the first ever literary detective genre. Sir Authur Doyle the creator of Sherlock Holmes even stated Edgar’s stories were a model of all time. Edgar is the reason that the Baltimore Ravens are the Baltimore Ravens yet he was given a proper funeral ceremony 160 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH.
Sometimes we’d like our recognition in our days on earth and in Edgar’s 40 years on earth he hardly ever got that. But after his death he was made a legend.
