A CRY FOR FREEDOM – A Poem Inspired By The Biafran Struggle
Five decades down the line,
And the cry can still be heard.
It’s the cry for freedom,
One the world has unjustly ignored.
The amalgamation was enforced,
For the parties never agreed.
And peace has always been breached,
While chaos has forever been.
If freedom is a right,
Why then can’t the people be?
For divided both may stand,
If united they never stood.
Unity may be strength,
But not one enforced on the wake of violence.
For hence lives were lost,
Memories will always hold pains and scars.
For every life that was lost,
Once had a meaning in another’s life.
And though every life is equal,
Some became martyred in the cause.
Martyrs keep the struggle alive,
And those who live will carry on.
And if the circle stays the same,
More lives will be lost in endless struggles.
If freedom is truly a right,
Why then can’t the people be?
For no unity enforced will stand,
No matter what power the enforcer wields.
