--Unexpected Alternative 2: Second Thoughts--
Oh, confused heart of mine,
Canst thou make up thy mind?
I’d listened when you said
‘take this rough path’,
And left the straight behind.
I’d thought it would be easy
I’d thought I could resist
The straight path’s gentle smile,
Her wild, wild laugh,
Lips begging to be kissed.
Was I, in fact, too hasty?
Maybe I should have paused
Before I took a turn
And ran along
The path my heart endorsed.
Heart, can’t you just let go?
Be good and heed my pleas!
Your tissues can’t survive
Soft as they are
Strong counter pulls like these.
I thought you’d made a choice
Your love I had professed.
Why then am I unsure?
I do not know.
The heart does not know best.
