Poetry Please is a series in which I attempt to create a visual accompaniment to poetry. This poem describes an imagined future where humans are long gone, but some animals remain as witnesses to a planet slowly recovering its ravaged systems.
It is quite a sad poem, but I feel like it conveys an important message.
A World Inherited from Yesteryear
Seagulls scream and take flight
in mourning gravel sky.
Crying for the waning light,
the hobbled earth swaddled in ice
and the howling wind
singing… of yesteryear.
Pigeons coo a melodic refrain
melting in the sunset’s grainy
welt of blood smear.
They coo for the riven collapse
of their scavengers society
fading… from yesteryear.
Rats feast on the city’s carcass,
Chased by cats, like a river of instinct.
They feast on cessation of fear,
on the sunsets' last breath,
exhaled in plumes of living light
sputtering… from yesteryear.
Insects make a womb of earth.
consuming names in segmentation.
Mating mycosis in soil atmosphere,
recycling death to rebirth,
breathing decomposition
in memory… of all yesteryears.
