The Elegant Devilment of Advertising
In the morning’s soft breeze
of quiet contemplation,
I mused a while reading,
a mental sigh, the tao te ching,
making notes on my phone,
thoughts for my food;
I languished in the park.
Suddenly, a bark of blaring,
uncaring advert-ese
caused me to jump
from my place of ease.
My thoughts were all scattered,
notes in tatters, as the voice
crafted its money message.
“Do you worry about lack of space?
We have your ultimate cloud solutions
in one place. All your storage needs
for a low monthly fee!” – I clicked ‘skip ad’
as I reeled
and my thoughts died within me.
This poem is based on a real experience that has happened a few times now and infuriates me beyond belief.
I shall set the scene a little. I was sat in my local park, the late spring sun warming me and infusing my pasty white Brit skin with much needed Vitamin D. Reading, thinking, listening to the distant chatter of birds, children playing and the hum of the bees.
When my tranquility was shattered by an almighty din!
The blare of an advert on my notepad app.
