“Sleep”
Sleep is
when we slip into…
and forget
who we are
where we are
what we have…
We slip into sleep:
the rocky soldier
at battle field,
the abstracted widow
mourning her only child,
the spirited helmsman
at the frenzied steering,
the youth scavenging for life
atop a plum tree,
the radiant hero of a victory dance,
the student feverish about
next day's exams,
the prisoner awaiting execution,
the lion and its raw roar,
the under-fed, the over-fed…
We slip into you,
Oh! silent Cassandra
talkative about our vanity,
talkative about our destiny,
and forget…
