Sometimes old poems take on new meanings years later. This poem originally appeared on Sumayyah Said So on August 4, 2014.
admirer of me
punish me gently
i’m not the hero you claim me to be
accept my humble apology
and my crown
you once polished so thoughtfully
no longer belongs to me
lay me to rest
now that you’ve slain me
i have lost my place
my pedestal has tumbled down
gravity holds me in her arms
i’m only human after all
i’m just a person not a god
don’t want to serve as your inspiration
don’t lift me up to let me fall
i’m only human after all
follower of mine
here our paths must diverge
your hopes and dreams will weigh me down
and the jungle i can’t traverse
through swamp and quicksand i must slog
and can’t afford to bring you along
so hate me
despise my face
and leave me to my fate
lay me to rest
now that you’ve slain me
i have lost my place
my pedestal has tumbled down
gravity holds me in her arms
i’m only human after all
