Flopping a set: When holding a pocket pair and the third card shows up on the flop.
The chances of flopping a set is about 1 out of 8, about 12%. Flopping a set can be very profitable. It's very well disguised, and usually you get paid-off because it's very difficult to detect them. It's like you're flying under the radar.
What I like to do when I flop a set is, I bet out. I hardly check raise because a check raise usually hints that you are holding two pair or better. I like to fire about 75% of the pot. Usually top pair will call you all the way, they might even raise you if they have top pair top kicker.
For example, let's say you have pocket 7’s in early position and you call a 2 bet of 2X or 3X from a player in late position. You go to the flop with 3 players (big blind, you and the raiser). The flop is 2 of spade, 7 of hearts and ace of diamonds. The big blind checks to you. What do you do? I don't even think twice, I bet out. Since there is an ace on the flop and you are playing against two people, it's more than likely that one of the players is holding an ace. If you bet out and you get a call on your initial bet, you can say “cha ching” because you got the ace trapped and they will call you down all the way.
This is my strategy when I flop a set. Please share your strategy and examples of how you play a set on the flop.
