You won't see that headline in any media coverage of the tragic death in Delmar, Delaware of Police Corporal Keith Heacook. He responded to a 911 call about a violent assault on an elderly couple. When he arrived, the attacker, Randon Wilkerson, then fatally assaulted the police officer. The killer is black. The police officer was white.
It's almost a mirror image of the shooting death of Ma'Khia Bryant by Officer Nicholas Reardon in Columbus, Ohio. In that case too, the police were called to prevent one person from harming others. That ended in the death of the attacker at the hands of a police officer. This ended in the death of the police officer at the hands of the attacker.
Notice that the Washington Post covered the story without mentioning that the attacker was black and the cop was white. Given that there's no evidence so far that racial animus played a part in the officer's death, that seems to be an appropriate omission. But I do wonder, had the outcome been reversed -- if the white cop had killed the black attacker -- would WaPo have supplied us with the racial identification of the killer and the killed?
