It's certainly better, at first i couldn't believe that we've such a bad opinion, I'm writing as a Pole, even thought i'm half german blooded. We are still developing country after almost 50 years of communism in our country. We're growing stronger in economics with every year continously since 1989.

Answering to your question...
Nowadays geography means thousands times less than in previous conflicts (Like WW2). We have minuteman missiles which can hit every target all over the world, we have warships that can swim wherever they want all over the world, planes, submarines etc...
In modern warfare most important weapons will be aircrafts missiles and systems to defend against them, who is more developed will win. Now to be honest Germany is in much bigger danger than Poland. My second homeland is struggling with inner conflict, i'm sad for my brothers and sisters in Germany, mostly they can't see the threat, but in fifty years(god defend us against it) we might have a German Caliphate next to our western border...

I pray for a greater future for next generations without wars, famine, diseases
I know a lot about history and write about it because of old rule which says:
"Not knowing the history is the shortest way to make it happen once again"
