Russian news agencies reports that Russia has moved a regiment of its advanced S-400 air defense system to Crimea as the dispute between Moscow and Kiev heats up over the security concern in the Black Sea area.
The agency cited a statement from Russia’s Defense Ministry as a source. The reports came after the announcement of the ministry that its navy would start to hold three-day military exercises in the Black Sea. In this practice Russia's Black Sea Fleet based in Crimea is also taking part.
In the training, there will be more than 10 warships, MI-8 and Ka-27PS helicopters indicating the situation in the region is volatile and the comments from Russian Navy Commander confirms this.
Russian Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said :
During the drill we are going to practice the issues of both operational and technical support. These include operations to counter underwater sabotage, navigational and hydrographic exercise, search and rescue missions.
Ties with Ukraine could be severed
Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday that Moscow could sever diplomatic relations with Kiev over the security developments in Crimea.
However, Russian state news agencies also reported that the prime minster was not interested in severing the ties.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said :
If there is no other way to change the situation, the president could take this step.
The country also deployed the s-400 system in Syria back in 2015.
The whole event started since the people in the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea voted to join Russian Federation in a referendum held back in March 2014.
