I know; I know. This is politics. And as the old saying goes, All’s fair in love and war… AND POLITICS! Democratic senators like Chuck Schumer team up with the “by-any-means-necessary” political operatives at the DNC to bankroll extreme Republicans in the primaries. Why do they do that? So that they can pick them off in the general election.
I mean, after all, it’s NOT ILLEGAL! And isn’t that the standard in American politics these days? Anything that isn’t overtly illegal is acceptable, and if it can help win elections, it’s also desirable. Moral qualms be damned!
In 2008, Rush Limbaugh launched “Operation Chaos,” which encouraged Republicans who lived in states with closed primaries to re-register as Democrats so they could vote for Hillary Clinton. Limbaugh also encouraged Republicans who lived in open primary states to vote for Hillary. Why? In order to slow down Barack Obama’s march towards the Democratic nomination and to keep his campaign’s people and money focused as long as possible on contested primaries instead of on the general election.
Partisans of each major party have mucked about in the primaries of the other party. But the fact that both parties have played this game doesn’t make it a decent or honorable game. It isn’t.
