I am not a Democrat, but then again neither is Bernie Sanders. This might be a sign for the United States though. I'm a registered Libertarian I would love for Sanders' recent victory in Nevada to be indicating the following:
The people are sick of the 2-party system.
I wouldn't ever vote for Sanders, because I disagree with almost everything he talks about. However, it does excite me to see that the Democrat party is starting to appear as though they may have no choice but to walk away from typical Democrat nominees like, well this time, Joe Biden.
That isn't to say that the DNC is going to go down easy. The Democrat establishment is already scrambling to create as many negative stories as they possibly can about Sanders, the same way the Republican establishment did during Trump's rise to the top of their ranks.
Trump was no Republican, hell he wasn't even a politician. This resonated with a lot of people. Bernie does something that I appreciate even though I disagree with him: He tells us what he wants to do even if it is going to be unpopular with some of his own party (which isn't really his party.)
The deeply-entrenched DNC and the media outlets that they presumably control are currently everything they can to dig up or invent dirt on Sanders, and this does not bode well for the man should he end up getting the nomination - which I still don't believe the establishment will allow - remember the Super-delegates?
Chris Matthews, a reporter that I really believe has completely tarnished his own name since 2015, was making World War 2 references before Bernie's victory was even confirmed by Nevada - painting a doom and gloom situation while at the same time suggesting that Trump is Hitler in the same segment.
I'm sure this smear campaign will continue to happen when anyone other than Joe Biden wins any upcoming states.
There are 2 important things to remember here though
- Bernie won a LOT of caucus States in 2016
- When the DNC and the super-delegates kind of screwed him out of the nomination in 2016 (if the super-delegate count had been reversed Bernie would have been the nominee,) many of his supporters refused to vote for Hillary - thus making it easier for Trump to win
I think that the overlords over in the DNC need to be very careful here: They make this too much of a negative advertising campaign or screw Sanders out of a nomination that he may very well deserve, and they are going to blow their chances again this year.
Personally, I don't think it really matters because I don't think any of the nominees stand a chance at beating Trump in November. It will still be very interesting to see how much "the gloves come off" in the upcoming months.
